Satyananda Yoga is an internationally recognised system of yoga that is firmly grounded in tradition, but adapted to the needs of modern living.
The Bihar School of Yoga, or Satyananda Yoga tradition is the system of yoga developed and shared by Swami Satyananda Saraswati and by his successor, Swami Niranjanananda Saraswati. Swami Satyananda sought to revive the ancient yogic sciences and offer them in a renewed form to suit the needs of modern living. Thus Bihar Yoga has a rich spiritual heritage offering an integrated system of yoga to address today’s needs in the community.
As a consequence of this work Satyananda Yoga is a systematic, step by step approach to yoga that aims to integrate all aspects of our being. It does not promote or engage in any political or religious beliefs. It provides everyone with tools for health, peace of mind and an inspired vision of life.
The journey begins with the cultivation of relaxation. Through yoga asana, pranayama, relaxation and meditation practices, the removal of physical and emotional tensions is encouraged, leading to a deepening understanding of ourselves on all levels.
The approach of Bihar Yoga therefore integrates the whole person, not just the physical body or mind. Emphasis is placed on awareness and students are encouraged to explore and learn about the various aspects of their personality through yogic practices. Positive transformation is a natural process which occurs as a result of regular practices performed with full awareness, not through forcing the mind and body to the limit and beyond.
