Padma Yoga came in to existence in 2005. Following a sports injury in 2000, founder Claire Thomas, took up yoga to support her recovery. Whilst she did not return to sport for several years, Claire found something in yoga that satisfied not only her desire to be physically challenged but also a depth in the practice that allowed her some time and space away from the challenges of her career. In 2004 she took the plunge and trained to teach, completing her first Teacher Training Diploma in 2005.
The intention behind Padma Yoga has always been to share the message of yoga, allowing each person that comes to a yoga class to start their own journey of self discovery. We aim to create an environment where like minded individuals can come together and explore the different aspects of yoga. Through this we hope that our students will find what they need in yoga. Whether that means becoming more flexible, kicking a bad habit, finding some peace in life, or making a significant life change. With the right intention and a dedicated practice anything is possible. We’d love it if you came and joined us.
As a result of this what we offer is not focused purely on the physical aspects of yoga. Posture work is one of the preparatory stages of yoga, it allows us to settle the body before accessing the higher states of awareness in meditation. Each class includes postures (asana), breathing techniques (pranayama) and deep relaxation (yoga nidra). We also teach hand gestures (mudra), chanting (mantra), energy locks (bandha), meditation (dhyana) and cleansing practices (shat karmas), along with a range of other yoga related subjects through more advanced classes and weekend workshops.
The intention is to offer you a whole range of practices, taught by qualified and experienced teachers, so that you can explore and find what suits you. If you have a particular area of interest or would like to discuss how yoga might help you please get in touch, we will be happy to discuss our classes in more detail.
